Ilmaz Syed is the founder of Calibrex. He is an OSINT expert, a defence investigative journalist and a geopolitical analyst, and a senior editor and primetime anchor whose on-ground reporting has covered the India–China LAC standoffs, the Manipur–Myanmar border, the Nagaland insurgency and counter-terror operations in Kashmir. He is a certified OSINT journalist (Basel Institute on Governance, Switzerland).
His grounding is military. As an Army Wing cadet of the National Cadet Corps he earned the NCC ‘C’ Certificate, was declared Best Army Cadet of the West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, and represented India in the NCC delegation to Vietnam under the Ministry of Defence’s Youth Exchange Programme in 2009. That grounding in discipline and defence carries through his reporting, and into Calibrex.
He has led newsrooms and on-air programming as Executive Editor of Calcutta News at Calcutta Television Network, at NKTV Media Group and as a senior producer and anchor at News18 Bangla, and earlier worked with Star, ETV News Bangla, NewsX, News Time and The Statesman. In 2017 he co-founded IMDC Network, a Kolkata media company producing and distributing independent Indian content and cinema.
Today he is the founder and editor-in-chief of Rashtrix, a partner and deputy managing director at Middleton Media Works, and the founder and editor of Raisina Wire, a newsletter of open-source geopolitical analysis on India’s strategic questions. Calibrex brings together what that work demands: investigation, accountable newsroom operations and the skills behind both. He studied journalism at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and works in English, Hindi and Bengali.
